I have certain aircraft that I have always favoured. Although I shall occasionally depict some models as flown by aces sometimes due to lack of suitable markings , I tend to be attracted to the more obscure, unusual or eye catching colour schemes. It's the reason one frequent these halls. What has happened for me is a vicious circle, of sorts.
I think this is done as the sort of end point in researching a particular plane type. I don't do the planes of the aces just because the ace flew the plane - I'll flip through my references and find a scheme that appeals to me. Preddy's craft is well known in this fraternity and has long since been in need of the attention you folks have given it. The fact that it has little presence, alone, is enough to keep production of Mustang markings to a minimum. Given the reputation that Eagle Editions has for creating quality decals, I am confident modelers will be able to produce a very accurate P-51. When I finally decided to build an more accurate kit with specific markings, for my first major kit surgery I chose to put a Hasagawa P-51D nose on a Revell P-51B fuselage. The profiles that have been created with help from Tom Tullis are the most accurate ones ever done, in our opinion. I read very many ace combat stories, reports, narrations, and personal accounts. The printing of the decals and the quality of the booklet are certainly up to the very high standards expected from this company.
Some of the German markings are pretty cool. We featured Old Crow and others for a very good reason - they are very popular subjects for the mass market including die-cast models; Old Crow honors a very nice man who is one of our leading aces and a very popular personality. A full set of national markings plus stencils are also supplied on the sheet. A number of these are in full colour - a real treat. So my research spurs my modeling, which spurs my research for more esoteric versions, marking, etc. One does however strive to remain as accurate as he possibly can and avoid gross mistakes.
I alone hold myself to my own standards. But overall, I'd say yes. By the way, Jon, that is a very good looking P-51B. One of the problems that have beset modellers has been judging the correct colour for the 352nd's distinctive blue nose trim. Eagle Editions get their decals custom-printed by Microscale, so you can pretty much guarantee the quality is going to be superb. As for the competition side of things, well, some subjects are so well photographed that there is very little excuse to not get the subject spot on.
